It's warp speed for director J.J. Abrams and next 'Star Trek' movie

J.J. Abrams.
There was a rumbling recently in the galaxy.

Paramount Pictures announced that J.J. Abrams has started pre-production on the new sequel to Star Trek.

Abrams' re-launch of the Star Trek franchise in 2009 was met with critical acclaim and a worldwide gross of more than $385 million at the box office.

The Enterprise's crew list for this flight will include John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban and Anton Yelchin. They will be joined at their posts by new cast members Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller.

Simon Pegg

A few days ago TrekMovie reported a comment made by Simon Pegg (who played Scotty in the first film) through the medium of tweets: “...Word on the bridge is the new script is AMAZEBALLS and I cannot wait!!!"

The Star Trek script, which Pegg was referring to is scheduled to be done by the end of this month and filming will begin this winter.

It's exciting news for Star Trek fans and for those unfamiliar with the world created by Gene Roddenberry, there's plenty of time to get acquainted with the likes of Captain Kirk, Dr. McCoy and Spock. Abrams' film is not scheduled to dock until May 17, 2013.

Until then -- live long and prosper.

Or just for fun, take the BBC Star Trek Quiz or Star Trek Personality Test to see where you would stand as a member of the Starfleet command.

I would not see our candle blown out in the wind. It is a small thing, this dear gift of life handed us mysteriously out of immensity. I would not have that gift expire... If I seem to be beating a dead horse again and again, I must protest: No! I am beating, again and again, living man to keep him awake and move his limbs and jump his mind... What's the use of looking at Mars through a telescope, sitting on panels, writing books, if it isn't to guarantee, not just the survival of mankind, but mankind surviving forever! -- Ray Bradburdy, Mars and the Mind of Man, 1971
